The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with The Citizens Sheriff’s Academy Alumni Association, invites you to participate in The Citizens Sheriff’s Academy!
What is the Citizens Sheriff’s Academy?
The Citizens Sheriff’s Academy is presented for citizens who are interested in learning more about how the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office operates. The Academy also addresses the challenges faced in today’s world. Participants in each session commit to meeting for 9 sessions, 2 1/2 hours per session, to learn about all factions of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. Classes are conducted by law enforcement personnel.
How Much Does it Cost?
There is no cost to participate in the The Citizens Sheriff’s Academy.
The Academy covers most aspects of the Sheriff’s Office. The nine sessions include:
- Sheriff’s Duties & Administration
- Traffic Enforcement
- Firearms
- Detective Division
- Domestic Violence / Search & Seizure
- School Resource Officers
- Crime Prevention / Community Policing
- Corrections / Jail Tour
- Transport Warrant / Court Security
- Communications
Each session contains unique insight into the many facets of law enforcement and the Sheriff’s Office, including the differences between the duties of the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies.

Requirements for Participation
- Applicants must have a residential or employment relationship within Hancock County.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age, or obtain permission from theSheriff.
- Applicants can have no criminal record.
How do I Apply?
- Please complete the Academy Application, Hold Harmless agreement, and Release of Information(Download below) and return it to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office or call 419-424-7229 for more information.



- Once your application and documents are received, you will be contacted with information on the next upcoming class. Should you not be able to attend the next class, we will keep you on file.
Citizens Sheriff’s Academy Alumni Association
Once you complete the Academy, you may choose to become a member of the Citizens Sheriff’s Academy Alumni Association. The mission of the Alumni Association, through education and volunteerism, is to support activities and initiatives that promote the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. The Alumni Association recognizes that individuals, businesses, and organizations have a significant impact in reducing crime. All segments of the community, working with law enforcement, are better able to improve the quality of life for Hancock County residents and to reduce crime within Hancock County.
