Citizen Ride Along
Experience Law Enforcement Firsthand
The Hancock County Sheriff's Office Citizen Ride-Along Program is designed to foster community engagement, promote transparency, and enhance public understanding of the responsibilities and daily operations of law enforcement.
This program offers residents a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the challenges and decision-making faced by our deputies, helping to build stronger connections between our office and the community we proudly serve.
Who Can Participate
Ride-Alongs are open to:
- Hancock County residents and business owners
- Students currently attending classes in Hancock County
- Individuals employed within Hancock County
Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, and all participants are subject to a criminal history check. Participation is limited to once every six months, with exceptions for agency-affiliated personnel (e.g., Explorers, Chaplains, Applicants).

Ride-Along Hours & Frequency
Ride-alongs are typically offered:
- Daily between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
- Exceptions to these hours may be approved by a Sergeant or the Sheriff.
How to Apply
Interested individuals must:
- Complete a Ride-Along Application and Waiver Form (Below). Print completed forms and bring to our office. Note that the Waiver must be notarized.
- Provide a valid ID and contact information
- (If under 18) Have a parent or guardian present to sign the waiver


Citizen Ride Along Waiver
Forms are available from the Sergeant, who also schedules all ride-alongs based on availability—generally within one week of application.
Participant Expectations
All participants must:
- Follow the deputy’s directions at all times
- Dress appropriately (collared shirt, slacks, and closed-toe shoes)
- Refrain from involvement in investigations, evidence handling, or private discussions with victims or suspects
Participants may not enter private residences without express permission from the resident and are not permitted in situations that may jeopardize safety or cause stress to victims.
