CCW Renewal Process
Individuals who obtained a license to carry a concealed weapon early in the CCW program will hit their four-year renewal dates in mid-April, 2008.
The Ohio Revised Code provides for the renewal of a CCW license 90 days prior to and no later than 30 days after the license expires. This provides a 120-day window during which the licensee may begin the renewal process. If the licensee fails to initiate the renewal process within this 120-day period, the CCW license will expire and will no longer be valid. This time window is in place to help spread out the flood of applicants that applied in April, May and June of 2004 at the beginning of Ohio’s CCW law. Individuals who applied in April, May and June of 2004 are encouraged to renew their licenses early to help spread out the flow of applications at Sheriff’s Office. This will help both the individuals and the Sheriff’s Office expedite license renewals. Individuals can determine the earliest they may reapply by counting back 90 days from the expiration date of their current license.
The Sheriff’s Office did not keep copies of any certificates of competency used for the original licenses. If individuals do not have copies of their certificates of competency they must contact their original instructors for copies or take a new class to obtain the certificate. Application forms and CCW pamphlets are available at the Sheriff’s Office or on the internet at www.ag.state.oh.us. Renewing licensee’s who used retired Law Enforcement or Military credentials and competency for their initial licenses should contact the Sheriff’s Office to check on their renewal documentation requirements prior to reapplying.
Upon the successful completion of the background check, a new license will be issued with the original license number and a new date of expiration that is five years from the date of the renewal. During the renewal process, the current license will remain valid, but must be surrendered to the Sheriff’s Office upon issuance of the renewed license.
The original training certificate of competency is valid for license renewal purposes provided that the issue date is less than six years prior to the renewal application date. If the original certificate is older than six years, then a renewed certificate of competency must be obtained from an approved instructor with an issue date prior to the expiration of the original certificate. If more than six years have elapsed since the original certificate issue date, then the entire 12-hour CCW course must be completed, with a new certificate issued, before a new CCW license can be applied for.
